Starehe Girls Centre & School - 2017 Global High Schools (Africa) Category Winner

Starehe Girls Centre is located in a rural setting about 18km north of Nairobi, Kenya. The centre was conceived as a charitable national girls’ high school catering for bright but economically and socially disadvantaged girls.

The establishment of the Centre was as a result of concerted efforts of individuals who envisioned an institution with a holistic education approach. Currently, the population stands at 480 students. The school motto: “Elimu Yetu, Nguvu Yetu” (Our Education, Our Strength) reflects the spirit of academic excellence that is the hallmark of the centre.  The school aims to play a significant role in developing the physical, intellectual, spiritual and social attributes of every single student, priding itself in producing students who are well-rounded and able to cope with the many challenges of today’s world. For the past eight years, 95 percent of graduates have gained admission to various local public universities, a few have gone to international universities while few others have joined diploma courses.
