Tonga High School

Tonga high school has an on-going recycling programme and has been involved in national competitions about climate change and renewable energy.

It currently pays high prices for fossil fuel electricity and wants the Zayed Future Energy Prize to fund the installation of solar panels and energy efficiency measures that could power up to 100% of the school’s electricity demand. This will enable it to save money, increase energy use, save CO2 and contribute towards the government’s ambitious renewable energy targets (a 50% reduction in diesel imports by 2020), at the same time as teaching students more about renewable energy. It hopes that energy audits can form the basis of science class teaching, not just for its benefit but also others locally. It wants to show that solar energy is economic, mature and reliable.
